Position Overview

The Criminal Defense Attorney will represent clients in a wide array of criminal matters, spanning from misdemeanors to serious felonies. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of criminal law, deliver meticulous legal research and analysis, and demonstrate superior advocacy skills in and out of the courtroom. This attorney will work closely with clients, colleagues, and support staff, ensuring the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.

Responsibilities

  • Provide zealous representation to clients charged with criminal offenses in state and federal courts.
  • Manage all phases of criminal cases, including investigation, discovery, pre-trial motions, trial preparation, plea negotiations, trials, and, if necessary, appeals.
  • Conduct comprehensive legal research and draft motions, memoranda, and other legal documents.
  • Appear in court for hearings, arraignments, pre-trial conferences, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Interview clients and witnesses to develop facts, formulate defense strategies, and identify potential legal and procedural issues.
  • Collaborate with investigators, experts, and other professionals to gather evidence and develop case theories.
  • Advise clients on case developments, legal options, risks, and potential outcomes.
  • Negotiate with prosecutors to resolve cases favorably for clients when appropriate.

Qualifications

  • 3 years’ experience practicing Criminal Law
  • Virginia State Bar License in good standing
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience practicing criminal defense, with a demonstrated record of handling misdemeanor and felony cases.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Comfortable managing a high-volume caseload while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Spanish or other language proficiency is a plus.

Position Overview

The Family Law Paralegal supports attorneys and clients handling sensitive family matters. As a key team member, you will help the office run smoothly while providing dependable, empathetic assistance on issues such as divorce and child custody. Responsibilities

  • Administrative Support: Manage attorneys’ calendars, schedule meetings, coordinate court appearances, and handle incoming calls and correspondence.
  • Legal Writing: Prepare, edit, and proofread a variety of legal documents, including motions, briefs, affidavits, subpoenas, discovery requests, and correspondence. Ensure all documents are accurate and comply with court standards.
  • File Management: Organize, maintain, and update physical and electronic client files. Ensure case files are complete, up-to-date, and easily accessible for attorneys and staff.
  • Client Communication: Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, responding to inquiries, providing case updates, and offering support with sensitivity and professionalism.

This position is designed for individuals eager to gain firsthand experience in the dynamic world of retail legal practice. Interns and externs at Invictus Law will immerse themselves in the day-to-day operations of a leading law firm, working alongside accomplished legal professionals on meaningful cases and projects. Whether you are considering a future in trial litigation, criminal defense, or family law, our program provides a comprehensive platform to develop your skills and explore your interests. The internship/externship at Invictus Law offers a blend of mentorship, practical learning, and exposure to a diverse array of legal matters. Participants will contribute directly to ongoing cases, research assignments, and client projects, ensuring a well-rounded introduction to the legal profession.

Responsibilities

  • Legal Research: Conduct thorough legal research on case law, statutes, regulations, and legal precedents to assist attorneys in building strong cases. Prepare concise research memoranda and present findings to supervising attorneys.
  • Drafting and Review: Assist in drafting legal documents such as briefs, motions, contracts, discovery requests, and correspondence. Review documents for accuracy, coherence, and compliance with court or client requirements.
  • Case Management: Support attorneys in organizing and managing case files, evidence, and exhibits. Track case progress and deadlines, ensuring timely and efficient workflow.
  • Client Interaction: Attend client meetings, interviews, and calls under attorney supervision. Assist in preparing summaries, notes, and follow-up communications.
  • Hearing & Trial Preparation: Prepare materials for hearings, depositions, mediations, and trials. Observe court proceedings when appropriate, gaining exposure to advocacy and courtroom procedures.

Qualifications

  • Extern: Hour requirement will be in accordance with school policy, typically 50 hours per 1 credit.
  • Summer Intern: Ability to work at least 25-35 hours per week for an 8-10 week program. Minimum 260 hours total.
  • Fall /Spring: Ability to work at least 10 – 15 hours per week for an 8-10 week program. Minimum 110 hours total.
  • Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited law school program as a 2L or 3L.
  • Academic Excellence: Demonstrated strong academic performance with a GPA of 3.0 or above (or equivalent, if applicable).
  • Legal Interest: Genuine interest in retail law. Previous legal coursework or experience is an asset, but not required.
  • Technical Proficiency: Comfortable using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and LexisNexis. Willingness to learn new software and tools as needed.
